This Sounds Oddly Familiar...

Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even allay its effects. They concede that some of the more spectacular solutions proposed, such as melting the arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting arctic rivers, might create problems far greater than those they solve.... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality...

This is from a 1975 Newsweek article. If you're surprised it's talking about the governments melting arctic ice caps, well, that's because the piece is about Global Cooling (which was the reigning environmental panic inducer back then). It took a mere 25 years to go from talking about an inexorable descent into another ice age to bemoaning the inevitable drowning of coastal cities by rising oceans (unless we all DO SOMETHING DRASTIC NOW! of course).

And, just to close:

"The central fact is that after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the Earth's climate seems to be cooling down."

It continues to amaze me how the band-wagons quickly change and how everyone is willing to jump on.
